Freezes:  Average date of freeze over is February 7. In the last 150 years, the lake has failed to freeze over about 27 winters.

Access:  North through Richelieu Canal to the St. Lawrence River, Montreal through Quebec City; South through the Hudson Canal to New York City or the Erie Canal.
